วันที่ 21 มกราคม 2554 (ตามเวลาในประเทศไทย) ไมโครซอฟท์ก็ได้ออกโปรแกรม Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 เวอร์ชันใหม่ซึ่งได้รับการอัปเดท Antimalware Engine เป็นเวอร์ชัน 1.1.650x.0 (เวอร์ชันก่อนคือ 1.1.630x.0) สำหรับเหตุผลของการอัปเดทครั้งนี้เป็นการอัปเดทเทคโนโลยีการป้องกันมัลแวร์ตามแผนปกติ ทั้งนี้ นอกจากทำการอัปเดท Antimalware Engine ของโปรแกรม Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) แล้ว ไมโครซอฟท์ยังได้ทำการอัปเดท Antimalware Engine ของโปรแกรมอีก 2 ตัว คือ Forefront Client Security (FCS) และ Forefront Endpoint Protection (FEP)
Microsoft Security Essentials นั้นเป็นโปรแกรมแอนตี้ไวรัสและแอนตี้สปายแวร์ของไมโครซอฟท์ที่ให้ผู้ใช้ Windows ของแท้ (Genuine) ดาวน์โหลดไปใช้งานได้ฟรี
สำหรับข้อความต้นฉบับที่ไมโครซอฟท์ได้ประกาศผ่านทางบล็อก Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) มีรายละเอียดดังนี้

การดาวน์โหลด Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0
ผู้ใช้ใหม่สามารถดาวน์โหลดโปรแกรม Microsoft Security Essentials เวอร์ชันที่ได้รับการอัปเดท Antimalware Engine เป็นเวอร์ชัน 1.1.650x.0 ได้ฟรีจากเว็บไซต์ Download Microsoft Security Essentials ซึ่งจะมีให้เลือก 3 เวอร์ชันตามระบบปฏิบัติการที่ใช้ ได้แก่ คือ เวอร์ชันสำหรับ Windows XP 32-bit, Windows Vista/Windows 7 32-bit และ Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit
สำหรับผู้ที่ทำการติดตั้ง Microsoft Security Essentials อยู่แล้วโปรแกรมจะทำการอัปเกรดเป็นเวอร์ชันใหม่โดยอัตโนมัติพร้อมกับการอัปเดทไวรัสซิกเนเจอร์
หมายเหตุ: การติดตั้ง Microsoft Security Essentials จะต้องทำการตรวจสอบว่าวินโดวส์ (Validate) ที่ใช้นั้นเป็นของแท้หรือไม่ก่อน
