VMware ออกอัปเดท VMware Player เป็นเวอร์ชันใหม่ในรอบกว่า 4 เดือน โดยล่าสุดได้ออก VMware Player 3.1.4 (Build 385536) ซึ่งเป็น Maintenance release ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อปรับปรุงการทำงานและแก้ไขปัญหาที่พบในเวอร์ชันก่อนหน้า โดยปัญหาที่ได้รับการแก้ไข อย่างเช่น ในเวอร์ชัน 3.1.3 นั้นมีปัญหาประสิทธิภาพการทำงานลดลงเนื่องจากสาเหตุการลดขนาดหน่วยความจำแคชของ VA (Memory VA cache size) และปัญหาการทำงานกับอุปกรณ์แบบยูเอสบีในระบบ Windows เมื่อมี USB host controllers มากกว่า 10 ตัว
นอกจากนี้ ใน VMware Player 3.1.4 ยังได้เพิ่มการรองรับ Windows 7 SP1 และ Ubuntu 10.10 เป็นระบบปฏิบัติการเกสต์ (Guest) และ โฮสต์ (Host) สำหรับการปรับปรุงทั้งหมดสามารถอ่านได้จากหัวข้อ การปรับปรุงใน VMware Player 3.1.4 Build 385536 ด้านล่าง
VMware Player เป็นโปรแกรมสำหรับใช้ทำการจำลองระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ (Virtualization) ที่สามารถใช้ทำการรันเวอร์ชวลแมชชีน (Virtual Machine) ที่สร้างขึ้นจากโปรแกรม VMware Workstation, VMware Server, VMware GSX Server หรือ VMware ESX Server และยังสามารถรองรับเวอร์ชวลแมชชีนที่สร้างขึ้นจากโปรแกรมจำลองระบบคอมพิวเตอร์ของไมโครซอฟท์ เช่น Microsoft Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server และดิสก์ในฟอร์แมตของ Symantec LiveState ได้อีกด้วย
ทั้งนี้ ตั้งแต่ VMware Player 3.0 เป็นต้นมาจะสามารถทำการสร้างเวอร์ชวลแมชชีนได้เอง และที่สำคัญสามารถทำการอิมพอร์ต Windows XP Mode ของ Windows 7 ได้อีกด้วย (อ่านวิธีการโดยละเอียดได้ที่ Import Windows XP Mode using VMware Player 3.0) โดยที่ VMware ยังเปิดให้ดาวน์โหลดและใช้งาน VMware Player ได้ฟรีเหมือนเดิม (ต้องลงทะเบียนก่อนการดาวน์โหลด)

ใน VMware Player 3.1.4 Build 385536 มีการปรับปรุงและแก้ไขปัญหาการทำงานต่างๆ ดังนี้
- The default main memory VA cache size (mainMem.vaCacheSize) has been be increased to 1000 MB and performance is improved.
- Now Player shows all USB devices in the Removable Devices menu as long as they are connected to the first identified 16 USB controllers.
- The application vmware-modconfig UI could not start up in a KDE 4 session in a SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 11 environment.
- In VMware Player 3.1.4, only administrator users can start VMware Tools upgrade from the VMware Tools Control Panel.
- When a virtual machine running on a Windows host was used to access an Omron Industrial CP1L Programmable Logic Controller, Player generated an unrecoverable error.
- When using NAT virtual networking on Windows hosts, the traceroute command did not work when used within virtual machines.
- The Easy Install feature did not work for Fedora 14 guest operating systems.
- During VMware Tools installation on a Fedora 14 64-bit guest operating system, the following warning message was generated while building the vsock module: case value '255' not in enumerated type 'socket_state'.
- The Easy Install feature did not work for Red Hat Linux 6 guest operating systems.
- The VMware Tools HGFS provider DLL caused a deadlock when making calls to the WNetAddConnection2 function from an application such as eEye Rentina in a Windows guest operating system.
- Added option to disable (time.synchronize.resume.host = FALSE) guest time sync when a host resumes.
- Setting a hidden attribute on a file in a shared folder from a Windows guest on a Linux host failed with an error.
