AutoRuns for Windows นั้น เป็นเครื่องมือในลักษณะเดียวกันกับ MSConfig ใน Windows ME/XP คือ จะทำหน้าที่ในการตรวจสอบมอนิเตอร์ และแก้ไขการสตาร์ทแอพพลิเคชัน ที่ทำงานโดยอัตโนมัติเมื่อเปิดวินโดวส์ แต่มีความสามารถสูงกว่า MSConfig มาก โดย AutoRuns for Windows นั้น จะแสดงรายละเอียดโปรแกรมต่างๆ ที่รันในระหว่างการบูตเครื่อง จากการคอนฟิกจาก startup folder, Run, RunOnce, และ Registry keys อื่นๆ
AutoRuns for Windows นั้น สามารถทำงานได้บน Windows ทุกเวอร์ชัน ทั้งแพลตฟอร์ม 32 บิต และ 64 บิต นอกจากนี้ยังสามารถคอนฟิกให้ AutoRuns ทำการแสดงโพรเซสที่รันจากที่อื่นๆ นอกจากที่กล่าวมา เช่น Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, และอื่นๆ
ในการใช้งาน AutoRuns for Windows นั้น สามารถเลือกที่จะไม่แสดงโปรแกรมในส่วนที่เป็นของไมโครซอฟท์เองได้ โดยการเลือก Options แล้วเลือก Hide Microsoft Entries ทำให้สามารถโฟกัสไปยังโปรแกรมที่เป็นเธิร์ดปาร์ตี้ (Third-party) ที่ทำงานโดยอัตโนมัติ และ auto-starting ที่ถูกคอนฟิกจากแอคเคาท์อื่นๆ โดย AutoRuns for Windows นั้นจะมีทั้งเวอร์ชันแบบ Windows GUI และเวอร์ชันแบบ command-line โดยในเวอร์ชัน command-line นั้นสามารถส่งออกเอ้าท์พุทเป็นไฟล์ CSV สำหรับนำไปใช้ในงานอื่นๆ ได้อีกด้วย

เริ่มต้นใช้งาน AutoRuns for Windows v8.70
ดังที่ได้กล่าวไปแล้วว่า AutoRuns for Windows v8.70 นั้น จะมีทั้งเวอร์ชันแบบ Windows GUI และ แบบ command-line การใช้งาน AutoRuns for Windows v8.70 นั้นก็เหมือนการรันโปรแกรมทั่วไป โดยเวอร์ชันแบบ Windows GUI นั้นให้ดับเบิลคลิกที่ไฟล์ Autoruns.exe ซึ่งจะได้หน้าต่างโปรแกรมดังรูปที่ 1 สำหรับเวอร์ชันแบบ command-line นั้นให้รันไฟล์ Autorunsc.exe จากคอมมานด์พร้อมท์ ซึ่งจะได้หน้าต่างโปรแกรมดังรูปที่ 2 ทั้งนี้ในเวอร์ชันแบบ command-line นั้น มีรูปแบบการใช้งาน และพารามิเตอร์ให้เลือกใช้งานดังนี้
